Whataburger, the Texas-based burger chain known for customizable made-to-order offerings, is expanding into Georgia for the first time with a new location planned for Carrollton. The move comes as part of the chain's aggressive national growth strategy, which will add 15 new restaurants by the end of June across seven states, according to Fast Company.
The expansion represents a significant shift in Whataburger's growth strategy since its 2019 acquisition by private equity firm BDT Capital Partners. The company has aggressively pursued franchising opportunities—resuming the practice after a 20-year hiatus—to accelerate its presence beyond its Texas stronghold of 720 locations. Today, the chain operates over 1,100 restaurants across 17 states, making it a formidable competitor in the Southeast's crowded QSR landscape.
For Atlanta-area business professionals, Whataburger's Georgia entry underscores the increasing competition among burger concepts seeking to capture market share in the Southeast. The chain's 24/7 operating model (closed only on Christmas Day) and emphasis on customization differentiate it from national competitors like Five Guys and In-N-Out, potentially reshaping consumer expectations in the region.
Beyond new locations, Whataburger introduced enhanced kids meal offerings with interactive packaging and collectible toys starting May 5, signaling efforts to build family loyalty and frequency.
