Match Group, the publicly traded company behind popular dating apps Hinge and Tinder, announced a $100 million minority stake investment in Sniffies, a map-based platform for queer men. According to Fast Company, the investment includes an option for Match Group to acquire the company outright in the future. Sniffies founder and CEO Blake Gallagher will retain leadership of the platform, which launched in 2018 and now serves three million monthly active users primarily through its web-based interface.

The strategic move mirrors Match Group's successful playbook with Hinge, which the company first invested in during 2017 before acquiring it in 2018. That investment transformed Hinge into what many consider the crown jewel of Match Group's portfolio. Simultaneously, Match Group announced it would wind down Archer, its competing platform for queer men launched in 2023, consolidating its position in the niche market and signaling confidence in Sniffies' differentiated approach.

Match Group's focus on LGBTQ platforms follows its 2024 acquisition of Her, an app for women attracted to women. The investments position the company to compete with Grindr, which remains the market leader in LGBTQ dating with 15 million average monthly users and $366 million in annual revenue as of 2025. While Grindr has expanded beyond hookups to offer telehealth services and lifestyle partnerships, Sniffies has maintained its identity as an unapologetic cruising platform—a distinction that attracted Match Group's investment capital.

User privacy concerns have emerged following the announcement, with some community members expressing worry about maintaining Sniffies' anonymity feature. This skepticism partly stems from Match Group's 2026 Federal Trade Commission settlement over OKCupid's unauthorized sharing of user data with facial recognition technology companies. Industry observers will watch whether Match Group's investment alters Sniffies' operational model or if the company can balance growth objectives with the privacy expectations that have defined the platform's appeal.
