Meta will eliminate approximately 10% of its global workforce on May 20, impacting roughly 8,000 employees across the company's 78,000-person payroll. The social media giant, which operates Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is simultaneously closing 6,000 open positions it had planned to fill, according to an internal memo from Chief People Officer Janelle Gale.
The company frames the reductions as necessary to improve operational efficiency while funding major strategic initiatives, particularly artificial intelligence. Meta has committed up to $135 billion toward AI development this year alone, signaling where the company's resources and talent priorities are shifting. For affected employees, Meta is offering what it describes as competitive severance, including 16 weeks of base pay plus two additional weeks per year of service, along with 18 months of covered COBRA health insurance. The delayed implementation until late May leaves current staff facing significant uncertainty during the transition period.
